Thursday Night Live Blog. DC United v Chicago Fire Leg 2.

01 November 2007

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of DC United and the Chicago Fire. DC comes home after suffering a 1-0 defeat in Chicago and knows 1-0 is the minimum they can do on the night. We'll be here from the first kick, all the way until the very end. Someone's getting eliminated tonight, join us to find out who that team will be.

Memo to Major League Soccer...when the lineups are due is when they should be up on MLS Net. Not having them up until just before kickoff makes you look like a joke. Anyone want to take bets on if Soccernet has it sooner?

From ESPN Broadcast:
DC United: Moreno, Emilio, Fred, Simms, Gomez, Olsen, Burch, Vanney, Boswell, Namoff, Perkins
Chicago: Barrett, Rolfe, Blanco, Carr, Armas, Pause, Conde, Segares, Brown, Robinson, Pickens

First Half:
Minute 1: Still no line ups up on MLS Net. The crowd is making a little noise as Chicago kicks off.
Minute 1: Fred does well to find Emilo, but he slips on the shot and Pickens collects.
Minute 2: Hip Hip Horray, MLS has lineups up. And Olsen was fouled. Free kick to DC United...
Minute 3: Rolfe clears.
Minute 4: Olsen takes a dive after Moreno does so well to set up the attack.
Minute 6: DC United have started out all guns a blazin'. Then Blanco gets it and goes rocket man from 22...and doesn't miss by much.
Minute 7: DC United free kick. Gomez from 32 out dead center. Dips well, but never curled towards the near post until he went past the byline for a goal kick.
Minute 9: Memo to Eric Wynalda, they are going to attack with four and defend with 10. Namoff has to defend the counter and does so successfully.
Minute 11: 10 minutes in and so far Chicago are doing all the defending. DC United at this rate are going to have one hell of a time breaking this side down.
Minute 12: Robinson watches the ball trying to kick it and catches Fred with the foot. Free kick toe DC United. The ball in just from Gomez doesn't get it to Emilio, but he looked to be in an offside position. That said, the ball in didn't miss the far post by much.
Minute 14: Perkins has to do some work to pick up a Blanco centering ball that looked as close to being in no mans land for him as they come.
Minute 15: Emilio earns the corner kick off Robinson. Vanney to take and off Robinson for corner number 2. This one goes far post, but Boswell isn't able to reach it and out for a goal kick. Segares takes a few seconds to collect himself.
Minute 18: Can't figure out what Fred was trying to do. Blanco with another bad pass but Chicago cover the mistake well.
Minute 20: Another spell of DC United possession. Moreno is fouled and another DC free kick. Burch takes and it's yet another corner kick.
Minute 21: Fred takes the corner and and DC waste it when Chicago clear through a Blanco foul.
Minute 23: Corner to Chicago. Blanco goes short, but DC clear.
Minute 24: Very very poor cross from Simms. You cannot waste the ball in that manner.
Minute 25: Fair play to the fans trying to up the atmosphere and will DC to a goal. So far DC have had alot of the ball, but are getting caught out too far up the park trying to get forward.
Minute 26: Fred fouls Robinson for a Chicago free kick. Blanco takes and Boswell clears...but Rolfe is fouled by Olsen...
Minute 27: Another Blanco free kick in a dangerous spot. But Perkins is in the perfect spot and collects. DC United spring the break, however Gomez is unable to keep.
Minute 28: DC get caught out and Chris Rolfe nearly chips the keeper, but the chip was wide of the near post.
Minute 29: The Fire defensive tactic is working. Emilio has a shot blocked by Brown on the edge of the 18 and stays down.
Minute 31: GOAL CHICAGO FIRE. CHAD BARRETT HAS PUT DC UNITED IN SERIOUS DANGER. BARRETT GETS IN BEHIND BOSWELL AND TAKES CARR'S PASS PERFECTLY. BARRETT IS SIMPLY 1 ON 1 WITH PERKINS AND BARRETT WINS GOING FAR POST. POOR DEFENDING BY DC UNITED AND FROM BOSWELL. DC UNITED 0 (0) CHICAGO FIRE 1 (2)
Minute 33: GOAL CHICAGO FIRE! CHRIS ROLFE PUTS DC UNITED BEHIND 3-0 ON AGGREGATE. ROLFE GETS IN BEHIND THE CENTER BACKS AND PUTS THE BALL IN A SPOT WHERE PERKINS CAN'T MAKE A PROPER SAVE. POOR POSITIONING FROM PERKINKS HOWEVER DIDN'T HELP. DC UNITED 0 (0), CHICAGO FIRE 2 (3).
Minute 35: Free kick from DC United well over hit and Pickens has no problem picking that ball out of the air.
Minute 36: Chicago is now looking to rub salt into the open wound. DC United look lost and Chicago is taking full advantage.
Minute 38: DC United denied off the line! Then Moreno gets a free kick for DC United about 16 from the byline. Gomez takes and Segares clears.
Minute 40: Mark Burch off, Rod Dyachenko on. DC United have absolutely no choice but to go all out attack.
Minute 42: Another dangerous free kick for DC United after Robinson gets busted for hand ball. This will look like a corner kick and Gomez's ball in is punched off by Pickens and then Simms is well offside.
Minute 43: Robinson does well to dispossess in the midfield, but Rolfe isn't able to power his way to the ball forward and Perkins goes in and collects.
Minute 45: This is a recording, another free kick for DC United. Gomez yet again takes and is a mile wide of the far post and Fred on running. That was simply pathetic.
Minute 45+2: DC United cry for hand ball in the box, but it was accidental. And with that...
HALFTIME: DC UNITED 0 (0), CHICAGO FIRE 2 (3).
First Half Thoughts: Chicago played the perfect first half. They frustrated DC at the top of their attacking third, denied them chances inside the penalty area, and countered brilliantly. DC United have no choice now to go for 3 goals. However with the way their forwards have been playing, it could very well be Murder She Wrote without the Angela Lansbury ending.
DC United have simply been that bad. For all the possession they have had, they have been frustrated and they are not capitalizing on the set pieces.
Second Half:
Minute 46: DC United kick off, a very tall mountain to climb.
Minute 47: Chicago nearly make it 3-0, but the wrong side of the netting is hit by Rolfe.
Minute 48: Emilio flicks off Robinson and earns the corner. However Boswell isn't able to head the ball towards goal and Chicago gets a goal kick.
Minute 50: CJ Brown takes Dyachenko's heavy touch and just wails it out for a corner. Emilio ends up with the ball and Pickens makes a point blank save for corner number 2. Second corner is taken short, then fails to find the far post...
Minute 51: Chicago clears.
Minute 53: Olsen to Moreno, but Brown snuffs it out for another DC United corner. Olsen takes and over hits everyone. Gomez finds Dyachenko, but Brown is there to clear. DC United look totally out of ideas.
Minute 54: YELLOW CARD SEGARES. Gomez smokes Segares and tackles very late. A yellow card may have been kind in the instance, but I feel it was fair. Calen Carr has stayed down way too long before jogging into the play...
Minute 56: Gomez takes the free kick and goes to Vanney, however his ball in has too much weight and Chicago clear.
Minute 58: Chad Barrett off, Bakary Soumare on. Chicago must feel this game is already over.
Minute 59: Namoff down the wing finds Emilio on the cross, but Emilio fails to head on goal and Pickens punches the fly ball out of the air.
Minute 59: Devon McTavish off, Bobby Boswell on. Took em long enough to get the man responsible for both goals off the park.
Minute 61: Soumare does well to keep Gomez off the ball. Then Blanco gets fouled by McTavish and correctly sees a yellow card.
Minute 62: Blanco is taken down again by Namoff then Fred goes between the legs to try and get the ball and puts his heel into the leg of Blanco. Free kick goes right to Perkins.
Minute 63: YELLOW CARD TROY PERKINS. Perkins takes down Calen Carr, and to be blunt off the replay should have been a penalty kick and a red card as Perkins was the last defender. The referee however judges it outside the penalty area and was in a bad spot when he called it. Blanco's free kick is off the wall.
Minute 65: Olsen puts one into the penalty area, but no one was around to make a play for it.
Minute 65: Calan Carr nearly gets Blanco's back heel in but goes down not getting a penalty decision.
Minute 66: Nicholas Addlery on, Luciano Emilio off. Emilio simply looks unfit. Addlery on his first touch is well wide of the near post. If DC don't get a goal by the 70th minute, I'm going to declare this ball game officially over.
Minute 67: Vanney with a cross in, and Pickens with a punch. The ball plays head tennis before Pickens collects.
Minute 67: Blanco finds Carr again, and despite the angle, doesn't miss the far post by much. Chicago are showing DC United how to get quality scoring chances right now.
Minute 69: GOAL DC UNITED. GOAL CLYDE SIMMS. SIMMS JUST TAKES THE TOUCH FROM DYACHENKO AND HITS THE PERFECT BALL FAR POST. THE FIRE DIDN'T HAVE A PRAYER AND DC NOW DOES HAVE A SLIGHT ONE. DC UNITED 1 (1) CHICAGO 2 (3).
Minute 71: Olsen isn't able to get to Addlery's flick on and Chicago gets a goal kick. The fans have woken from their slumber and are making noise.
Minute 72: Addlery nearly gets to Olsen's ball in. Why wasn't he on the park from the start knowing Emilio wasn't fit?
Minute 73: Fred makes one man miss, crosses to Addlery and isn't able to put any power behind it. Pickens parry's the ball out and then Vanney's power shot is judged offside. How, I have no diea.
Minute 74: GOAL DC UNITED! GOAL XX. IT'S A TIGHT DECISION FOR GOMEZ, SAYING ONSIDE AND HIS SHOT IS BLOCKED BY PICKENS, AND RIGHT TO THE END LINE WHERE IT GOES IN. THIS GAME HAS ALMOSTED TURNED IN THE SAME VEIN ON A MAGICAL NIGHT IN ISTANBUL TURKEY. DC UNITED 2 (2) CHICAGO FIRE 2 (3).
Minute 76: Moreno offside.
Minute 77: Carr has his shot saved off the line by McTavish. Then on the counter Addlery earns DC United a corner. Vanney to take, and boy this atmosphere has turned and it's making all kinda noise. Corner is blocked and cleared.
Minute 78: Gutierrez on Carr off? Couldn't tell who was subbed out trying to keep up. This game has gone crazy and it feels like something special is going to happen.
Minute 80: Moreno earns DC another corner. Vanney takes and earns corner number 2 in succession. This one goes far post, but Conde is there.
Minute 81: Blanco can cry all he wants, but McTavish got all ball.
Minute 82: Gomez flicks the ball back to Addlery, but he doesn't get the shot off. It is all DC United right now and Chicago look to be cracking under fire.
Minute 83: That was until Simms with a poor decision and the foul.
Minute 84: Olsen from 35 and the field goal is good...oh wait wrong sport. Goal kick to Chicago.
Minute 87: Olsen gets the cross in and Gomez heads wide of the near post. Free kick to Chicago.
Minute 88: Blanco off, Franks on. Gutsy sub going to pack the defense in. Conde concedes the corner.
Minute 88: Poor finish from McTavish blasting high and wide of the far post.
Minute 90: Poor switch from Fred, right to Gutierrez. That won't help your cause.
4 MINUTES OF ADDED TIME!
Minute 90+1: Conde denies the short corner and Pickens collects off the cross in.
Minute 90+2: Olsen is fouled and how is that a no call? That looked like a free kick. On the counter Franks has an open net...AND MISSES THE NEAR POST!
Minute 90+2: OH YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME! Vanney gets to Moreno and the official gets it right. Gomez did handball, but that was accidental. The only reason that is called is because it gave the attacker the advantage.
Minute 90+4: Corner to DC taken short. and Dyachenko with a lunging tackle from behind and that my friends is always going to be a red card.
Minute 90+6: Perkins punts long. Namoff simms into the box and Fred gets it. Cross in is headed out by Conde...AND THAT IS IT!
FULL TIME: DC UNITED 2 (2) CHICAGO 2 (3).
Final Analysis: What a final twenty-five minutes of football we just witnessed and it rivals some of the tensest football you will ever watch. The referee made one bad call in not giving Chicago a penalty in the sixty-third and it looked very very tight on the call in the ninety-second minute, but after seeing it multiple times, the referee made the right decision. I do have to question DC United starting Boswell and Emilio. Boswell plain and simple cost DC United this game and Addlery for Emilio was the spark that DC United needed up front. It's also a shame that Moreno spent more time in the midfield than forward.
To all Chicago Fire fans, I will admit I was wrong. Blanco willed this team to victory and the three goals they scored over the two ties were simply divine. This Fire team are starting to take on a look of a team of destiny. Their tactics until the sixty-fifth minute were simply perfect, but then started defending way too much and not bothering with the counter. That was their biggest mistake.

Well that is all the time I have for tonight. I will be back tomorrow night with the second leg of the Texas derby. Until then, I'm Johnathan Starling wishing everyone a wonderful evening. All feedback is welcomed and appreciated. May the debate begin~!

Best night for Chicago since the Bears won the NFC. Just great and great for the MLS.

Ok, I'm from Chicago so forgive me. Wonderful.
Great blog job by BC, as always.

Victory, Wow. An instant classic for ESPN. Just a unbelievable last 25 minutes.

I am much too exhausted to remind everyone how many experts never gave the Fire a chance.
